GRAPHIC DESIGN - VEXILLOLOGY

Image
 Vexillology is [a science] all about flags. Boise's Mayor, Lauren McLean, prompted an initiative to redesign the city's 35-year-old flag to embrace Boise's vibrance, history, and values.   ...Challenge accepted! Following the principles of good flag design outlined by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA), including a little artistic liberty during conceptualization, the following are the strongest concepts created in the development of a final submission. {Final submission is not currently displayed until the decision is made by the Flag Design Committee.}

WORD PORTRAIT | Typography* (*sort of)

Image
CONVEYING WORDS THROUGH IMAGERY! An example of the technique of ‘WORD PORTRAIT’ illustration. This example used the IARNG Military Service bio of (CSM) Larry W Steele as the ‘words’, with each letter filled in with the varying colors/tones of a (referential) photograph- underlayment, to create the ‘ WORD PORTRAIT’ ILLUSION of his likeness. The words are there, but the (real) message is expressed through imagery.

Graphic Design: Basic Elements and Principles

A PERCEPTUAL STUDY. The following is a perceptual study of examples demonstrating (combinations of) primary and secondary design elements and principles. • Element(s): Line; Shape; Size/Scale • Principle(s): Alignment; Repetition; Proximity; Balance/(A)symmetry 1) Primary - Element / Principal: Line / Proximity Secondary - Elements(s) / Principle(s): Shape, Size/Scale / Alignment, Repetition, (A)symmetry  2) Primary -   Element / Principal:  Line / Repetition Secondary -  Elements(s) / Principle(s):  Shape, Size / Alignment, Proximity, Asymmetry 3) Primary -   Element / Principal:  Shape / Repetition Secondary -  Elements(s) / Principle(s):  Size/Scale / Proximity, Asymmetry   4) Primary -   Element / Principal:  Shape / Repetition Secondary -  Elements(s) / Principle(s): / Alignment, Proximity, Balance/symmetry  5) Primary -   Element / Principal:  Shape / Alignment Secondary -  Elements(s)...

Vector Graphics: Logo Design

Image
CONCEPTUALIZATION.  Need = Logo!   Message? ..."Uhhmm?"  Result!...  A developing business, Country Goat Yoga , needed a logo. A representation of its 'brand.'  Without direction as to what the message might look like...  ...Incorporating several meanings relevant to the essence of the business, and its intent and culture... ...Resulting in this conceptualization of a logo grounded in the rural tradition of (hot-iron) 'branding' while clearly representing the company's goods/services and essence.  The circular form is chosen to innately appeal to the human eye. The silhouette (obviously) represents the interaction between yogi and livestock within a country setting. The [name-brand] typography echos rustic nuances reminiscent of 'hot-iron' brands forged and milled by hand, i.e. interactively engaged, just like the goat joga experience is! Ever-so-subtly, a pleasant smile (cut-out) levitates the silhouette; a reflection of the joyful experience....

Execution v. Viewer Perception

Image
Sometimes, a message's execution is missed. Apple recently presented, what I thought was a brilliant ad, Crush!   However, controversy and backlash ensued. Some viewers perceived the message to convey the destruction of the artists' creativity and 'the tools of the trade'. Conversely, I perceived the message to mean that Apple had 'compacted' everything every user might need into the sleekest iPad Pro package yet. Making the iPad Pro an invaluable tool for all creativity. And I don't mean just artistic creativity. ...To Create! Nevertheless, with the controversial perception in mind, I mocked up a print Ad version that attempts to convey a similar message about its versatility and functionality without "destructive" imagery. ...as some have perceived of the Crush! ad.

Podcasts: Production and Editing

This is an example of a podcast- conception, development, editing, and production.   This was produced from 8 separate audio takes.  The narration editing was left a bit 'raw' to convey a conversational tone.   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Microphone: Courtesy of Videezy.com   Music: The Remedy by Stefan Kartenberg (c) copyright 2018 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/JeffSpeed68/57161 Ft: Robert Warrington Sound Effects: from Zapsplat.com Software: Audacity

Video: Effects (VFX)

Image
  This short video is an example of VFX composting.   Developed from (2) separate elements to generate a singular video presentation.   The sky is a separate (still) image from the foreground video footage; the two performers, the land, and the water.   In-computer camera tracking techniques are used to sync the (still) sky with the motion of the video footage.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sidenote: This is a rough draft example. Look closely, just after the mid-point of this 6-second clip, a hint of the 'masking' composite is evident, as a momentary "halo", around the female performer's head, revealing the evidence of two separate elements.
